RYDE: Deal or No Deal

March 5 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CITY OF RYDE

Although we’d love art to ‘speak for itself’, sometimes we need to communicate,
negotiate and manage the conflict that comes with creative professionalism.

Working professionally in the arts and creative sector means communicating with a diverse
range of people across an array of complicated circumstances. Any ordinary day could include
managing a new professional relationship, negotiating your fees, umpiring an argument or
setting better boundaries for the work. Sometimes with no clues or tools to help us at all!

Deal or No Deal is a practical workshop packed with real-life activities and fun challenges to
help creatives learn the basics of communication, negotiation and conflict resolution all in the
safety of a friendly workshop space.

Participants will learn the following, with a focus on arts practice and creative industries:
+ The basic elements of effective communication, both in person and in writing
+ Managing negotiations with a focus on how to create a win-win scenario
+ Understanding how to minimise the idea of a ‘zero sum game’
+ Tips and tricks on better ways to say no
+ A visual aid to assist with mapping conflicts to achieve the best resolutions for all
Practical exercises and homework will be provided for all the discussed strategies.

What do I get?
All participants of this workshop also receive:
+ Lifetime access to a Dropbox folder jam-packed with additional resources and helpful links.
+ A practical Workbook to assist with the interactive elements of the workshops.
+ Access to additional free webinars to supplement the material covered in the workshop.
+ The possibility of further one-to-one business advice, mentoring and support from one of our creative industries business specialist advisors. We have a whole team ready to help!

Ideal for: Come along if you are a creative of any level, from recent graduate or curious hobbyist to a freelancer or an established arts practitioner. This workshop is open to anyone who lives, works, studies or plays in the City of Ryde.

Who is presenting?
Monica Davidson is an award-winning expert on the creative industries, who began her professional life as a freelance journalist and filmmaker. In 2014 Monica completed her Masters degree in Screen Arts and Business at AFTRS, and was appointed as the first NSW Creative Industries Business Advisor by the Department of Industry. Shortly after she founded the social enterprise Creative Plus Business, which is dedicated to educating creative people about small business and marketing skills. In 2019, Monica was awarded the QUT Creative Enterprise Australia award for being a Creative Trailblazer that “advocates, mentors, donates, educates and advises within Australia’s creative economy”. Monica continues to work as a writer, filmmaker and occasional performer.

What’s Creative Plus Business?
We’re a social enterprise dedicated to educating creative people and arts organisations about business skills. We help through sharing practical knowledge in a fun and irreverent way, and everything we do is designed to help creatives to feel more confident and comfortable about the entrepreneurial aspects of their creative practice. We believe that a bit of naughtiness, tempered with a kind heart and a big dose of professionalism, is the key to helping creative people understand the boring basics of business.
